Our journey through the world of pottery led us to the serene realm of Fumotogama, where we had the privilege of meeting the esteemed master potter Naoyuki Inoue in Shodaiyaki, Kumamoto. Fumotogama exemplifies the seamless blend of traditional pottery techniques with a contemporary twist, resulting in captivating pieces that showcase the essence of both past and present.

As we entered Naoyuki Inoue's studio, we were immediately captivated by the harmonious ambiance and the meticulous craftsmanship that permeated the space. Naoyuki's passion for his artistry was palpable as he guided us through the process of shaping on the potter's wheel. With effortless precision and an unmistakable touch of sophistication, he breathed life into the clay, transforming it into vessels of beauty and function.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Fumotogama is their use of a wood-fired kiln—an age-old technique that adds a unique character to each piece. Naoyuki shared with us that the firing process takes an incredible two full days, where the intense heat and natural interaction between flames and clay create stunning effects on the pottery. The laborious process is a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship required to produce works of such remarkable quality.

What sets Fumotogama apart is the seamless fusion of traditional techniques with a modern artistic sensibility. Naoyuki Inoue masterfully combines the time-honored methods of slipware with contemporary design elements, resulting in pottery that exudes both elegance and innovation. The pieces reflect the artist's keen eye for balance, form, and texture, elevating them beyond mere functional objects and into the realm of art.

Our visit to Fumotogama left us inspired and with a deeper appreciation for the artistry that goes into creating pottery. Naoyuki Inoue's dedication to preserving traditional techniques while infusing his own artistic expression has resulted in a collection that is both timeless and contemporary, resonating with art enthusiasts and pottery aficionados alike.
