Our adventure led us to the charming city of Miyazaki, where we had the pleasure of visiting Masato Yamawaki in his pottery studio. Nestled within a serene garden lovingly tended to by his mother, Masato's studio exuded a tranquil ambiance that perfectly complemented his philosophy of creating pottery that seamlessly blends everyday utility with aesthetic beauty.
Masato's journey into the world of pottery began after spending seven years in Tokyo. Yearning to reconnect with his roots and inspired by the allure of the craft, he returned to Miyazaki. It was here that he embarked on a two-year apprenticeship in Miyakonojo, honing his skills and immersing himself in the artistry of pottery.
As we explored Masato's studio, it became apparent that his creations are a celebration of the beauty found in everyday life. He places great emphasis on utility, ensuring that his pottery serves a practical purpose while also exuding a refined aesthetic. Each piece is meticulously crafted, reflecting a delicate balance between form and function.
The influence of Masato's surroundings is evident in his pottery. The serene garden that envelops his studio, lovingly tended to by his mother, infuses his creations with a sense of tranquility and harmony. It is as if the natural beauty that surrounds him finds its way into every vessel he shapes, creating pottery that resonates deeply with those who use it.
