Description
Aoi Watanabe is a female potter hailing from Akita, a region located in the northern part of Japan, where it receives heavy snowfall in winter. Akita is also well-known for its rice fields, and Aoi utilizes ashes from rice husks to create a beautiful blue glaze called Namako-yu. She employs a kerosene kiln and fires it in a specific way to achieve the desired blue color. If the conditions inside the kiln change, the color may turn out differently.
Although her style of pottery is considered Mingei, a Japanese term for traditional folk art, Aoi endeavors to incorporate a new approach by blending traditional and modern art.
