Hida Shunkei is a traditional form of Japanese lacquerware that originated in Takayama, in the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. Known for its clear lacquer finish, it highlights the natural beauty of the wood grain—typically using Japanese cypress or zelkova—giving each piece a warm, amber glow. Developed in the early 1600s, this craft emphasizes elegant simplicity and fine handcraftsmanship. Unlike most lacquerware, which is opaque, Hida Shunkei’s transparent coating allows the wood’s character to shine through, and it becomes even more beautiful with age.
